Can abs workouts alone help you lose belly fat fast?
The straight forward and simple answer to this is no! In order to lose fat you either have to promote weight loss by either dieting or increasing your metabolism. Unfortunately, Ab workouts do not boost the bodies metabolic response enough to stimulate fat loss.
Involved in personal training and sports medicine, how do I lose belly fat fast is one of the most common questions I get asked. Most people believe that concentrating on ab workouts is the best way to get a six pack. However, the abdominal muscles are hidden below a layer of fat and losing this is the key.
The best exercises are, in fact, those that stress the whole body and therefore increase metabolism. Those I would include would be:
Various forms of squats, deadlifts, presses, pulls, lunges, clean and presses, snatches, sprinting etc.
Most of these exercise involve the quadriceps muscle, the big thigh muscle at the top of the legs. Due to their size, any exercise that involves these muscles burns a lot of energy. They are exercise that I would advise not doing every day as they put a lot of stress on the body and would cause fatigue. I would incorporate them into an overall exercise program.
Interestingly these exercise also stimulate the production of growth hormone which would help increase the size of the abdominal muscles and help get a six pack.
I am not advising neglecting exercises that involve the abdominal muscles. If these are stimulated with focused exercises then they will benefit from the boost in growth promoting hormones. I normally promote exercises that directly target the abs and core muscles as a small part of an overall regime with more time spent focusing on the full body exercises.
Also, keep in mind that nutrition is the most important factor in the quest to lose belly fat fast. It is no good having a great workout regime and then eating junk. Remember, you get what you put in.
